Cary WolinskyCreated July 1, 2000. Photographs show Navy Capt. Angus Rupert in a Stearman bi-plane testing The Tactile Situation Awareness System (TSAS), a vest that vibrates against parts of the upper body to let the pilot know where he is in space. In a roll, the vest will vibrate on the shoulders when the plane is up-side-down. As the nose tips toward the ground, the vest will vibrate on the upper chest. For the purpose of photography we wired in an LED display to indicate when the vest is vibrating in the region of the upper chest.
